Kinja'd!!! "sm70- why not Duesenberg?" (sm70-whynotduesenberg)

When you see a car with tinted windows, do you find it pretentious? Is a car somehow showier or more flashy/expensive looking with tinted windows? I understand that they are stereotypically associated with black luxury sedans:

Kinja'd!!!

But these days they are applied to literally everything:

Kinja'd!!!

Basically, apparently some of my mom's friends commented, more or less, that "As if the car wasn't pretentious enough, now he got the windows tinted." I'm not sure it makes one bloody bit of difference.

It makes no difference.

Depends where you live, but in Ontario you can tint both passenger and drivers windows. In BC, you can only tint rear passenger windows and your rear windshield. I tend to find cars with tinted drivers windows drive less courteously towards me than others.

A. It's almost a necessity in states such as Florida, as it helps keep the interior cooler.

B. It hides whatever you have inside, as in tools, electronics, etc.

So no, tint is awesome.

No, I like the privacy of it. My truck's factory tint is almost black, it looks good.

Where I live it can reach 120F + in the summer. Everyone has tinted windows. It's the cars without tint that stand out. I'm actually going to leave the windows on my E30 tint less just so it stands out s little. Plus the old school german glass looks great.

Also, there is no such thing as a pretentious car (apart from the occasional Youabian Puma or similar)

Are you guys allowed to do both front windows and back? in BC where I grew up we could only do back.

With most cars coming from the factory with it nowadays, it's certainly a functionality thing more than pretentious. It keeps the interior cooler and keeps things more private.

Here in the Big O, there very much is. I don't think my car counts, but there aren't really any Lamborghinis registered here, and it's not for a lack of people who can afford them.

My front windows aren't as dark, but legally I can make them just about as dark as the rear windows.

The people might be pretentious, but not the car (when it leaves the factory).

Which is what I told my mom. She agrees with me (all our cars have tinted windows), but her friends don't, at least for a teen. Why do I care again?

I never heard the pretentious opinion of tints. I just think it looks cool. Lesser reasons - privacy, heat (not as important since I'm in Milwaukee). I got my 1998 white Forester tinted and I think it looks good on a white car.

I went a few degrees past illegal but I should have gone a touch darker. I like to do the fronts lighter than the rears so it still kinda looks like I'm not entirely illegal.

I've got a medium–light tint on all my windows and the rear. Although it's illegal in some states, it makes the car more comfortable when I'm at school in Oklahoma and I think it makes my car look better. I don't think it's inherently pretentious, particularly on my Honda Civic.

My sister has really dark "probable cause" tint on her Mustang:

Kinja'd!!!

All the windows are as dark as that quarter, and even the windshield is tinted darker than stock. I don't think it's pretentious as much as "wow, our dad is sketchy as hell."

There's nothing pretentious about driving an old ass eclipse, not a damn thing. I have that gold mirror tint they put on Lexus SUV's on my 2 windows and back hatch. I'm sure it was illegal even in Boston where I picked up the car but it doesn't look half bad and no one can tell I'm eating my taco bell whilst driving a standard. If I drive near a cop I just...I dunno, I roll down the windows

Kinja'd!!! QCGoose > sm70- why not Duesenberg?

It has absolutely nothing to do with being "pretentious". Tinting gives privacy to the car's occupants while also helping to keep some heat out of the interior during sunny days. It also looks better to tint the front windows when the rear windows are already tinted from the factory, giving it a much more balanced look.

No offense to your mom, but her friends sound pretty damn dumb.

In hot climates, its a necessity. Otherwise, I could take or leave, some people like it, some don't, but never really saw it as a big deal either way.

I was pulled over by a cop in NYC who was a douche and said that because I had tinted windows, I'm more likely to shoot him.

I will never own a car without tint, because:
1. It looks better
2. It keeps it cooler inside
3. It supposedly makes the interior age slower

My car currently has MD State Legal 35% on the sides and rear and 50% on the windshield. The windshield was by far the best call. I no longer need to wear sunglasses while driving, I'm no longer blinded by people's brights, and my interior is much cooler in the summer. It's not dark enough to get me pulled over, either.

After driving a Uhaul across country that didn't have tint I don't see how anyone can NOT have tint. My left arm got sunburned, and I was roasting from the sun. Even with the AC on max it couldn't keep up.

I guess that if the weather / sun is too strong it is helpfull, but i tend to think that it looks awful. Specially only half of the car tinted. When i travel with the kids on the mini mini van, I use sticky shades on the rear side windows. As they grow older they are less and less used.

In the last few years, in my country, people are tinting the windows, and , although we are one of hottest and sunniest countries in Europe there is simply no need to do it. It makes the cars look cheap.....

I was indifferent to it, but after seeing it in brazil or asian countries ( 90% of all cars ) , I made my opinion. Just an aesthetics thing....

When I see a car with dark tinted front windows, I just assume the driver wants the ability to remain anonymous while committing traffic violations (e.g. turn right on red and strike a pedestrian). ;-/
